AMIGAs provides students with computational and professional skills to aid them in successfully entering an applied mathematics research environment. This program will include tutorials, professional development activities, and research talks related to the mathematics of data science and its applications. Applied mathematics is rapidly changing from classical applied mathematics, focused mainly on physical applications, to a field that is more heavily focused on data and technology. In this era of “Big Data,” students must be prepared to enter a different field of research, more heavily focused on computational skills such as statistics, optimization, and machine learning. These skills include, but are not limited to: computer programming, mathematical modeling, communication across different disciplines, data management, and computing.
