In this introductory talk I will discuss the traditional statistical mechanics approach to discrete lattice models, based on a Hamiltonian or energy functional, and contrast this to the combinatorial approach. In particular I will illustrate the differences and similarities by considering aspects of three models: the self-avoiding walk, the Ising model and meanders.
