Abstract
Recorded 27 October 2022. Emilie Ringe of the University of Cambridge presents "Electron and optical microscopy of magnesium nanoparticles" at IPAM's Mathematical Advances for Multi-Dimensional Microscopy Workshop. Abstract: This talk will focus on the microscopy approaches used to understand the size, shape, optical properties and reaction dynamics of nanoparticles with a special focus on plasmonic magnesium structures. We will overview tomography results and how they match the models obtained with our group’s Wulff construction tool, Crystal Creator. This will be followed by a brief detour into electron diffraction of various twinned nanoparticles, including body-centred cubic and body-centred tetragonal. Hyperspectral optical spectroscopy results showing the excitation of plasmon resonances will be described, followed by an overview of electron spectroscopy results including plasmon excitation maps matched with numerical simulations. If time permits, experimental and numerical advances on photothermal effects will be discussed.
