Abstract
'History matching' of reservoir models by adapting model parameters such that the model ouput matches historic production data is known to be a very ill-posed problem. I will discuss the limited observability and controllability of reservoir states (pressures, fluid saturations) and limited identifiability of reservoir parameters (permeabilities, porosities, etc.). I'll present results from our group in Delft including a method to use the remaining freedom in the parameter space after history matching to obtain upper and lower bounds for the prediction of oil recovery from the updated reservoir model.
