Abstract
We will consider knots in 3-dimensional space and surfaces that span such knots. Every knot admits a spanning surface. Some knots admit many, possibly infinitely many spanning surfaces. The Kakimizu complex encodes the minimal genus spanning surfaces. Moreover, an understanding of the geometry of the Kakimizu complex is beginning to emerge.
