We discuss the symmetric matrix completion problem. It involves filling in missing entries of a matrix to meet certain criteria, such as achieving a specific rank. We begin by introducing the fundamental concepts and theorems that connect symmetric matrix completion to algebraic matroids and algebraic statistics. Subsequently, drawing from our collaborative work with Josephine Yu and May Cai, we explore how tropicalization can be a useful tool in characterizing symmetric rank 2 matrices.
