Abstract: There is great interest in using gravitational wave (GW) signals from compact mergers to measure cosmological parameters, driven by the current Hubble constant tension. GWs directly provide the luminosity distance to their source which can be combined with redshift information to make these measurements. For events that are observed without electromagnetic counterparts (known as dark sirens), galaxy catalogues can be used to provide the relevant redshift information. This talk will focus on this method and the major challenges it comes with, including (but not limited to) handling the incompleteness of galaxy catalogues and the impact of GW population assumptions on the inference of cosmological parameters.
