Lossy compression is becoming popular for scientific data because of the need to reduce scientific data significantly. However, while the application of lossy compression is well understood in many domains (audio, video, image), it still opens many questions when the data is produced by scientific simulations or scientific instruments. In this talk, we explore three research frontiers of lossy compression for scientific data: (i) the most effective compression algorithms, (ii) the identified applications of lossy compression and (iii) the recent methodology improvements to evaluate, compare and assess the impacts of lossy compression. We will describe the current state of the art in these three topics and present potential research opportunities.
