Two Problems In Third-Party Logistics: Finding Customers, and Moving Their Freight Efficiently

November 10, 2017
Abstract
C. H. Robinson is a third-party logistics company: a match-maker between customers, who have freight that needs moving, and carriers, who have space to move the stuff. We will look at two of the problems in this space: building customer relationships, and combining small freight units to use transportation efficiently. We will also talk about using the vast customer/warehouse network to leverage existing relationships to better understand our customers and their needs. We will also examine the math of the consolidation problem, and why it isn’t as hopeless as it seems. Bio Elena received her Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge in 2012. After three years as a postdoc and an interlude as a software developer, she joined the data science group at C. H. Robinson in January. Brian has spent his career looking for ways to integrate the information data holds into business decision making. Prior to joining C. H. Robinson in June, he was a Data Scientist with Think Big Analytics helping companies leverage technology to tackle their massive data.
