Stochastic superparameterization is a multiscale modeling framework for turbulence that has been applied in one-dimensional wave turbulence, periodic quasigeostrophic turbulence, and in a quasigeostrophic channel model. The general framework is reviewed, and connections are made to multiple-scales asymptotics and to conventional superparameterization.
Next, quasigeostrophic model results are presented, focusing on the modeling of stochastic backscatter. Backscatter is particularly important in geophysical and astrophysical turbulence since it can generate a net upscale transfer of energy.
