Urban transportation services exhibit a number of fundamental characteristics that affect market structure as well as operations. These characteristics include economies of scale, the existence of multiple fixed points affecting customer waiting times, and imbalances in flows over short periods of time. The talk will explain these characteristics using simple models, and will discuss some of the consequences of these characteristics. It will also be pointed out why more research on such problems are needed.
